Dermal Fillers
If you want a non-invasive way to look younger and feel more confident about your appearance, dermal fillers could be the right option for you. At Peak Health Group, we offer a variety of dermal filler treatments to help combat the effects of aging.
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are substances that are injected into the skin in order to restore lost volume. As we age, the volume in our skin decreases as we produce less of the naturally occurring substances that make our skin firm and elastic. This causes our skin to droop, and we lose that plumped-out, youthful look we have enjoyed in our younger years. We also start to see the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
By injecting dermal fillers, we can help to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and restore some of that fuller, more youthful appearance to the face and lips.
Dermal fillers are an ideal first option for anyone wanting to retain their youthful looks and restore their confidence about their appearance. They are a non-surgical procedure, so this a gentle first step to take, rather than a drastic intervention.
What are dermal fillers made with?
The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery lists all the approved types of dermal fillers – a combination of these may be used, depending on your individual needs:
1. Hyaluronic Acid
This is the most common type of dermal filler. Hyaluronic acid is produced naturally by the body in order to keep your skin firm and plump. However, levels decrease as we age, so we can help ourselves to look younger by having hyaluronic acid injected into the face.
Popular dermal fillers that use hyaluronic acid as the main ingredient include:
- Juvederm
- Restylane
- Belotero Balance
Hyaluronic acid products are particularly effective for smoothing the area under the eyes. They also help reduce the appearance of lines around the nose and mouth, such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines.
2. Poly-L-Lactic Acid
Poly-L-lactic acid is a synthetic filler that works with natural substances produced in the body. It stimulates collagen production. Collagen is one of the main building blocks that keep our skin taut and elastic when we are young. As we age, our ability to produce collagen naturally is reduced. By injecting Poly-L-lactic acid, we can help to boost our collagen production, restoring some of our youthful appearance.
Poly-L-lactic acid is frequently used to treat more obvious wrinkles in the face. It dissolves naturally once it has done its job.
3. Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA)
CaHA is found naturally in our bones. It is made into a fine gel-like filler that can be used to treat deep lines and wrinkles in the face. The results of CaHA are long-lasting. Popular CaHA fillers that you have probably heard of include Radiesse.
4. Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)
PMMA is a synthetic substance that works in harmony with the substances produced naturally in the body. Fillers made from PMMA also contain collagen. And, the filler will not dissolve, so it is highly effective at producing long-term results. Fillers made with PMMA are often used to treat scarring such as that produced by acne. Popular brands include Bellafill.
Which dermal fillers will I need?
The End Goal Is To Make You Feel Better, No Matter What The AgeYour treatment plan will be completely personal to you, and you will have the chance to discuss it fully before any treatment goes ahead.
What does dermal filler treatment involve?
Before
Prior to your treatment, you will need to tell your specialist about your medical history, particularly if you have any medical allergies or take any blood-thinning drugs. Your specialist will then decide if you are a suitable candidate for treatment.
If you are suitable and you have booked a treatment, you will be invited to your appointment at the clinic. You will receive the best standards of care from the moment you arrive. Prior to beginning your treatment, your skin will be cleaned and you may receive a topical anesthetic to minimize any discomfort.
During
The fillers will be injected carefully into your skin, in the areas agreed in your treatment plan. You may feel a slight discomfort, but most people find it totally bearable.
After
The great thing about fillers is that you can see results right away after your treatment. You may experience some slight bruising or swelling, but your specialist will do their absolute best to minimize this. And, it will fade quickly over the next few days.
As fillers are a non-surgical procedure, there is no recovery time – you can resume your normal life straight away. You can even go back to work the same day!
Do dermal fillers have permanent results?
No, dermal fillers are a temporary solution. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons is very clear in explaining that dermal fillers are a first step for those wanting to reduce the early signs of aging. The results of dermal fillers will not last forever, and there will come a time when they may not be enough to produce the results you want.
When this time comes, surgical options such as eye lifts, brow lifts, or even full facelifts may be the answer.
